Le Groupe d'Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale (GIGN) est l'unité emblématique de la gendarmerie en matière d'intervention et, plus globalement, de gestion des situations d'exception nécessitant l'engagement d'hommes spécialement entraînés et équipés ou la mise en oeuvre de techniques ou de moyens spéciaux. Le groupe a été fondamentalement modifié le 1/09/2007. Il est dorénavant fort de plus de 380 hommes et femmes hautement spécialisés, regroupés au sein de 5 forces complémentaires (intervention, proteciton, observation / recherche, appui opérationnel, formation) et dirigés par le général Denis Favier.
